How to Prepare, Maintain, and Install British Cedar Cladding

Wastage Allowance

• Over order by 10%. British cedar is quality checked and graded as standard and better.
• Up to 10% of boards may have natural defects like minor surface splits, end splits, and occasional dead knot holes. These are characteristic of British cedar.
• Allowing for 10% waste prevents the need for jointing runs.

Fixing Types

All fixings must be corrosion-resistant to avoid permanent staining. Recommended materials:

• Stainless Steel

Screws vs. Nails

• Both annular ring shank nails and lost head nails can be used. Screws are also suitable.
• Fixings should be flush with the surface; avoid countersinking to prevent splits.

Size of Screws/Nails

• Nails: Minimum diameter of 2.0mm.
• Screws: Minimum diameter of 3.5mm, pre-drill pilot holes to minimize splitting.
• Length: Cladding depth plus at least 25mm.

Installing UK Western Red Cedar Cladding

• Can be fitted while green (moisture >20%). Fixing centers must not exceed 450mm if green.
• Face Fixing: Most secure method.
• Board Fixing:
  • Boards <100mm: One centrally placed fixing per batten.
  • Boards 100-200mm: Two fixings per batten, 25-50mm from edges.
  • Hidden recess profiles >100mm: One face fixing and one angled recess fixing.

Recommendations:

• Use treated battens to protect against moisture.

• Secure cladding to battens, not directly to plywood or sheet materials.

• Protect exposed end grains with trims, metal capping, or end grain sealant.

• Leave a 175mm gap between the ground and cladding to avoid moisture exposure.

• Batten Installation:

  • Horizontal cladding: Vertical battens.
  • Vertical cladding: Horizontal battens.
  • Maximum fixing centers: 600mm (450mm if green).
  • Use pressure-treated graded battens.
  • Minimum batten dimensions: 50x38mm or 50x25mm if counter battened.

• Trims:

  • L-shaped trims for corners and surrounds, also to achieve straight lines.
  • Miter jointing is an alternative to L-shaped trims.

Finishing:

• Do not apply finishes (oils, stains, paints) to wet timber. Wait until dry to avoid splotches.
• Joint staggered runs on battens and edge glue to prevent separation and water splotching.
• Avoid staggering green timber.

Cavities

• Ensure a 10mm or more cavity ventilation barrier to prevent moisture buildup.
• Fit metal vermin mesh at all cavity entrances.
• Optional: Fit a breather membrane to ply/brick walls for added moisture protection (essential for saunas).

• Goods are manually offloaded by our hauliers to the kerbside, or delivered in secure boxes to your front door.
• Protective sheets can be supplied with timber if you plan to store outdoors for extended periods of time, please let us know.
• Air drying sticks and be sent with your order free of charge if you plan to season your timber, ie for saunas or places where low moisture content is important.
• Please let us know if heavy goods vehicles are not suitable for your access.
• You will receive notice 1 hour before delivery to ensure someone is present to accept and sign for delivery.
• Standard delivery is usually made within 3 working days.
• Express delivery is usually next day but can sometimes take 2 working days.

• All orders are quality checked prior to being dispatched, nevertheless in the unlikely event your order has a larger ratio of imperfections than set our in our description’s, we will offer to swap the lengths in question and we will also offer a full refund including all transport costs.

• If you would like to return an order that is showing signs of use or damage not caused by us, ie, lengths cut down, continuing nails, paint or oils, or spoiled timber due to being stored outside unprotected. If you find yourself in this predicament we will still accept return of the timber and will have to assess its new condition and negotiate a reasonable refund offer for you.

• Refunds are issued within 48 hours or timber being returned and checked, trade customers can have opt for credit notes.

•    Applying preservatives to externally installed western red cedar is optional. In order to enhance the natural appearance and to delay the silvering process we advise using a quality translucent UV protection oil such Owatrol Textrol Hes Clear or for a more cost effective oil use Osmo 420 Clear. These products will slow the weathering / silvering process. Re apply every 2 – 3 years to maintain enhanced natural appearance indefinitely.
•    If your species is vulnerable to fungal attack we advise mixing Owatrol VC175 Mould Killer a powerful internal and external anti fungal additive mixable with any oil, varnish lacquer, wood stain or paint, simply mix with your preferred coating for lasting protection. Note: British western red cedar is not vulnerable to fungal attack it naturally resists fungus. 
•    Once your cladding has eventually silvered you may like the silver colour as many customers do, some customers achieve this faster by applying weathered aged wood accelerator for a unique and sort after natural worn aesthetic.  
•    If you want to revive your timber once silvered off there are numerous solutions that will bring your timber back. Depending on how weathered your wood is you may be able to apply wood stain straight onto it, try sampling a small section to see.
•    If your wood is heavily weathered, we advise using a power washer after scrubbing the wood with a mixture of water and bleach. Though labor-intensive, this process is cost-effective. Ensure you wear appropriate personal protective equipment. This method is also effective for removing algae, mildew, and fungus. After cleaning, apply protective oils, lacquer, and stains for long-lasting protection and satisfaction with your wood. Do not power wash softwoods with a finished depth of less than 18mm. Avoid positioning the water jet close enough to damage the timber.
 

•    Additional drying time may be required depending on your application.
•    British cedar is a low movement class species suitable for installing whilst green (wet) as long as it is not going straight into a sauna or other extreme environment, such as hot summers day.
•    Do not apply oils, stains or preservatives until suitably dried.
•    Please contact us before delivery to ensure you are prepared. If anything is not right, submit a complaint immediately, and we will be happy to assist.
•    On hot summers days you should not fit green timber of any kind, make sure direct intense sunlight and heat is not making contact with your green timber whilst in storage, to avoid boards from crimping.
•    Its advised to store your timber either indoors, or outside under ventilated and weighed down tarpaulin sheets and or in a shaded area where the elements cannot reach your wood.
•    There is no need to sticker your timber if it is received dry, it can be stored stacked neatly under cover until ready for use.
•    Timber should stored raised above ground.
•    If you decide to sticker your order, the sticks for drying on site must be clean and ideally planed to minimize marks. Any faint marks caused by stickering will fade away over time.
•    If you wish to dry your green cedar sticker every layer and allow it to acclimatize to the area it is being fitted to until the moisture content is below 16%, or 10% for saunas, use a wood moisture meter, this can take 2 – 4 weeks. The process can be greatly sped up if stickered indoors with fans, slightly above room temperature. Ensure moisture can escape the room.
